Icarus was a favorite of mine from the Witness Marks sessions. We recorded this demo and listened and played with it in the context of the album, but it felt more suited for the next record I was working on.

Two years later and it didn’t fit there either. So we scrapped it. I still really love this song and I occasionally play it live. Here’s the demo we recorded about hubris and the crippling weight of discovering your own folly.

Lyrics

We keep holding it together like
Two birds of a feather like
Two kids who don't know better I'm
Icarus without his wings
You're still the only sunlight I have seen
You perfect thing
Youre angelic holding both my missing wings

Holding it together like
The glue on both our hands and I’m
Chasing our romance and tasting
Nothing but regret

I’ll fly like icarus without his wings
Hubris and awkward energy
Karma hasn’t been that kind to me
You’re too beautiful
And I’m this ugly thing
I’m this broken dream
It’s just a bit of bad timing
Just another example
I’m a bad mistake and you’re the brightest star I struggled long to see
You’re too good for me
You’re too good darling

I tried holding it together
Chasing missing feathers
Glue us back together and
Fly as though the world was ours to see
But dreams aren’t meant to be
Like you and me
I’ve just got nothing left to hold onto
So I’m holding onto you
